Alternative Classical has launched Opera Roulette, a free and fun way to
watch scenes from live opera performances from all over the world.
Opera Roulette is a classical jukebox comprising almost 300 high-quality YouTube videos curated by the team.
It follows the success of Concert Roulette, which has been played by thousands of people in over 110 countries during the last year, and was described as “the most fun since lockdown began” (Culture Whisper).
It continues to get hits from all over the world. Opera Roulette is an easy way to discover opera from home without needing any prior knowledge of the artform.
It is free of charge and offers a novel way for music fans to
stumble across scenes from operas from the renaissance to the present day.
Viewers are presented with a digital opera performance, which might be a full scene from the Royal Opera House, or might be a pop-up performance in a supermarket.
Each video, embedded from YouTube, starts at the moment of the upbeat.
Following the ‘swipe right’ model of dating apps, viewers can choose to watch the scene they’ve landed on or click the ‘another!’ button to move on.
The chosen videos are all live performances that have been filmed in high definition.
The music choices span from the late renaissance/early baroque period to the present day, with music by Monteverdi, Purcell, Mozart, Joseph Bologne, Puccini, Janáček, Ethel Smyth, Judith Weir and Jeanine Tesori. You can choose to filter by time period (classical, romantic, 20th century, etc.) or
just dive straight in with all periods.
The videos are from a whole selection of organisations in the UK and further afield, including Glyndebourne, Garsington Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Komische Oper Berlin, English National Opera and British Youth Opera.
