Spotify’s New Release Radar Is A Perfectly Curated Weekly Mixtape, Just For You
Spotify made waves and found new fans with its Discover Weekly feature, which creates a new, custom playlist for every user on the planet. The platform uses a complex algorithm to choose two hours’ worth of music that the individual listener might like, focusing on lesser-known acts, album cuts, and remixes for many, as opposed to serving up the same big hits that can be heard anywhere. The purpose here is to help people discover music, because everyone is interested in finding that next great song before anyone else. With several billion plays already credited to the feature in less than a year, it’s clear that Discover Weekly is a hit.
Now, the company is expanding on the popular discovery method by introducing Release Radar, which kicks off this morning.
This new playlist is essentially a mixture of two other well-known lists: Discover Weekly and New Music Friday, which shares all of the noteworthy songs from mostly mainstream acts released that day. To create every user’s weekly Release Radar, Spotify uses the same technology behind Discover Weekly to analyze what types of music a person likes, and from there, the platform will only serve those new tunes that are relevant to the user.
